What if your cargo does not fill a container? Many new Dongguan exporters wonder: should I use LCL to save freight, or wait until the cargo fills an FCL container? There is no absolute answer — it depends on volume, cargo value and time requirements. This article calculates both modes clearly.

LCL vs FCL

| Comparison | LCL (Less than Container Load) | FCL (Full Container Load) | |---|---|---| | Suitable volume | 1-15 CBM | Above 15 CBM (20GP/40GP/40HQ) | | Per-CBM cost | Higher, charged by CBM | Lower, charged by container | | Transit time | Consolidation waiting + deconsolidation, slower | Loads and sails directly, fast | | Cargo safety | Shared with other cargo, prone to damage | Independent space, safe and controllable | | Clearance | Consolidated clearance, more documents | FCL clearance, simpler process |

When to Choose FCL?

  1. Single shipment above 15 CBM, where per-CBM cost is clearly lower;
  2. High-value, fragile or damage-prone cargo needing independent space;
  3. Frequent shipping, where China to USA FCL ocean shipping with a long-term contract locks rates;
  4. Need for DDP door to door one-stop service, where FCL clearance and delivery are more efficient.

When to Choose LCL?

For small, non-urgent, low-value shipments, LCL is more flexible; but note LCL is charged by CBM and includes consolidation and deconsolidation fees, so total cost may not be lower.

Hui Haitong International Logistics specializes in USA FCL ocean shipping with dense Shenzhen Yantian/Shekou US sailings; for Dongguan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Zhongshan and Huizhou exporters with small trial orders, we can also arrange LCL; once volume stabilizes, switching to FCL brings immediate cost advantages.

Q: How many CBM makes FCL worthwhile? A: As a rule of thumb, above 15 CBM FCL is more cost-effective; 20GP holds about 26 CBM and 40HQ about 68 CBM — the larger the volume, the greater the FCL advantage.

Q: Can LCL use DDP door to door? A: Yes, but LCL needs separate clearance and delivery after deconsolidation, requiring more documents; a professional forwarder pre-reviews the paperwork to avoid consolidation delays.

Q: How much faster is FCL than LCL? A: FCL loads and sails directly without waiting for consolidation and deconsolidation, usually 3-7 days faster on the US route; time-sensitive cargo should prefer FCL.

Q: Can I start with LCL and move to FCL? A: Yes. New customers can test the channel with small LCL shipments first, then switch to FCL with long-term rate contracts once volume stabilizes — a common growth path.
